ESERA 2027
30 August-3 September, MÁLAGA, SPAIN

Welcome Letter
We are delighted to welcome you to the 2027 ESERA conference in Málaga, Spain, from 30 August to 3 September 2027. It is a great honour to host Europe’s leading conference on science education, especially since ESERA was last held in Spain more than twenty years ago, in 2005, in Barcelona.
The theme for this edition is “Fostering Critical Thinking from Science Education in an Age of Misinformation and Artificial Intelligence“.
In today’s complex world, science education must respond to several challenges facing citizens.
Over the last decade, the notion of a “post-truth” society has emerged, one in which personal beliefs, often deemed irrefutable by many, have come to outweigh logic and evidence, giving rise to widely held assumptions that can mislead public opinion. We also face the challenge of “infoxication”, a problem that arises from excess and paradoxically increases misinformation.
These problems have been compounded by fake news, digital advertising, online algorithms, social media and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, all of which are transforming how scientific knowledge is produced, communicated and received.
In this context, science education should reflect these changes by promoting a scientific and critical understanding of the societal challenges we face. This approach will empower citizens to make informed decisions and participate actively in the search for solutions to the pressing issues of our time. Critical thinking has long been regarded as a fundamental goal of science education. We believe that science education plays a crucial role in developing critical thinkers by making explicit the meaningful connections between scientific thinking and critical thinking.
For these reasons, ESERA 2027 seeks to highlight the educational importance of fostering critical thinking, and to offer the science education research community an opportunity to reflect on and discuss how it can be promoted effectively. We aim to create a stimulating and inspiring academic environment, complemented by a social programme that will allow you to experience Málaga’s enchanting atmosphere.
Together with the Scientific and Steering Committees, we look forward to welcoming you to Málaga for ESERA 2027!

The event’s visual identity expresses Andalusia’s uniqueness, in southern Spain and its role as host of ESERA 2027. The logo features meaningful colours and symbolic elements representing the key features of three organising universities, Almería, Jaén and Málaga, together with the conference’s scientific vision.
The yellow sun evokes the brilliant light that bathes Almería, with its unique desert landscape and deep blue sea. It also illustrates the sunlit landscapes of all three provinces and their open, vibrant, and welcoming spirit. It represents the energy, clarity, and forward-looking vision that bring us together. The blue symbolises the Mediterranean, a natural bridge connecting lands, people, and expertise. Beyond its geographical meaning, this blue speaks to the heart of what we want this conference to be: a commitment to dialogue, exchange, and a shared effort to build something meaningful and relevant.
The olive branch within the sun represents Jaén, often described as a “sea of olive trees” and known as the world capital of olive oil, a crop that has shaped its identity, culture, and economy. The olive branch symbolises a connection to the roots and foundations of science education, which looks to the future without losing sight of its core principles. The deep violet of ripe olives reflects a commitment to equality, inclusive perspectives, and feminism. In this shade, tradition meets transformation, and the land meets social justice.
Finally, Malaga’s lighthouse, an icon of this city since 1817, represents its maritime heritage and has long guided sailors. In the same way, it is intended to guide the ESERA community. In an age of misinformation and artificial intelligence, we need a reference point, a guiding light that helps us foster critical thinking and responsible action in Science Education.
